Criteria for parents

What the ICU will want to see from your baby and you before going home.

  _______

Most hospitals will be able to give you a few days notice of the discharge date of your baby.
Some hospitals may even give you an idea of your baby's discharge date early on in their stay of the NICU, but this date may be revised if there is a change in your baby's condition.
There are hospitals with parent rooms, so parents can stay the night and spend an entire day providing total care for their baby.
You should always discuss the discharge date of your baby with the neonatalogist if you have any concerns.

Your baby must meet the following criteria:
  _______
Maintain their body temperature
Be breathing well
No apnea or bradycardia spells
Be feeding well from either breast or bottle
Show a steady weight gain

  _______
You feel comfortable holding and touching your baby
You know how to bath her
You can measure and give medication and know what it's for ยท You are able to take his temperature
You are comfortable feeding your baby either by breast or bottle
You have a list of emergency numbers and services available to you
You are aware of immunizations given in the hospital
You know when a neonatal follow up is scheduled, if available
